The Storyteller's temple on the central island of Ensō is, unsurprisingly, where your local deity can most often be found. Those seeking to strike up a conversation or pursue the Storyteller for answers are not guaranteed an immediate answer, but they can certainly try. If one waits for long enough after posing a question, their expectation for a response from the deity in question may very well prompt them to happen along...eventually.

And yet you come to me asking if others seek a cure, a request that, if successful, would surely rob you of at least one of these.

[The dog lets out a quiet chuff, pushing out of it's sitting position and ambling towards the altar at the far end of the room.]

One must wonder if you seek the answer to this with the expectation of relief, or abject denial.

Their stubborn carelessness is something in which I have no input, I'm afraid. They care nothing for my aspirations or desires, instead selfishly choosing to see something which I am not. Even were I to show them my true face, I suspect it would do naught to dissuade them.

I seek only the truth, in this regard. Is it within your power, and would it be something you would do if others requested it?

[The answer takes its time in coming to him; the Storyteller far more interested in leaping up onto the altar, and settling down, circling around several times prior to making themself comfortable, chin on their paws. Their eyes close, seemingly at peace in this chamber, present company included.]

For it is not their choice, ultimately, to decide to disrupt the story that awaits you upon your return. Is it possible for me to intrude in such a manner, to change and obliterate the very essence of you? Certainly.

[One eye opens, looking up at him.]

That would be your decision to make. Not theirs, nor mine.

I'm quite certain I have said as much before--my story is over, and it is only by your cruel and whimsical hand that it has been prolonged well past any reasonable epilogue. No one cares to hear a tale that goes on for far too long, you know.

[Ardyn smiled in much the way a sahagin might, cold-blooded and sharp with nothing behind yellow eyes.]

There is no 'return' for me. Neither shall there be; I am naught but a plague and shall no doubt be once again exterminated as one.

Yes... thousands of years does tend to warp one's perspective. [They muse passively.] But this world, as cruelly prolonging as it is, has already proven something. There is more to you than a simple Scourge, Ardyn. And there are more options than you had perhaps realized.

Oh, I've no doubt you would love that. The lost acolyte of the divine, crawling to an altar pleading mercy and forgiveness? Begging 'please, oh merciful god, take pity on my wretched plight' and hoping that perhaps such a divine force on high might lower itself to listen to the suffering of an insect.

I have no need of your options. Neither have I any desire to see that little fluke repeated. Whatever came forth in that desert is naught but a faded memory, and in this present time I am simply a plague which wears a long-forgotten human face. There is nothing more to it, no matter what those sentimental fools choose to believe.

Then that is your decision-- and so it shall be.
