   IC INBOX: THE STORYTELLER

The Storyteller's temple on the central island of Ensō is, unsurprisingly, where your local deity can most often be found. Those seeking to strike up a conversation or pursue the Storyteller for answers are not guaranteed an immediate answer, but they can certainly try. If one waits for long enough after posing a question, their expectation for a response from the deity in question may very well prompt them to happen along...eventually.

[As long as Gladio minds the horns, the Storyteller does not mind the odd pet. What dog doesn't like to be pet? Ear scritches are particularly noteworthy, mind.]

[The dog sniffs tentatively at the chocobo, but does not otherwise react to her; they'll let her come to them, if she wishes.]

Tiana. Highest beauty. To be loved.

I suppose you have a knack for names.

[Well it's good he doesn't mind the pettings because once she's free Gladio shuffles over to sit next to Tory, immediately reaching up to give him a few scritches.]

Damn I didn't even mean to do that part.

[Kweh? The fearless chick stops a few inches away on the other side of the ST, tilts her head and cheeps again. Then she stretches out her little neck so she can nibble lightly at the fur of one paw, a single careful little groom. Oh but their fur feels different than Leopold's and she cocks her head the opposite way, another curious little kweh?]

Nicotiana, Nightshade. It was fitting for her color and... Noctis...

Noctis.

[The word is somber. The Storyteller sits back on their haunches and watches the chick nip at their fur as she wishes. Their physical shape is hardly one that requires the same level of care as any mortal's.]

I am sorry for that. For him.

[They sit back and Ti decides that's an invitation. She shuffles a little closer, tucking herself against Tory's belly, between their front legs. A soft contented chirp. Warm and fluffy, just like her big brother. This is excellent.]

I just... hope he got to go back to Luna.

You don't... know where they go any more than you know how we got here do ya? [He's pretty sure he knows the answer but he just wants to hear it verified.]

[A slow shake of their head.]

I cannot say. I suspect they return to their stories...to the point from which they departed them, so that they may complete that narrative. But oftentimes they return, and it is difficult to say why.

Like Iggy did... [A nod. It's as close to a reassurance as they're going to get. But that means he doesn't have to worry so much. At least that Noctis has a measure of peace and a quiet life to return to.]

So I probably should've asked Iggy before I brought all this shit up here but you can eat, yeah?

Even if you don't have to and it's not necessary and- [A pause as he realizes he's defending the question before they've had a chance to answer.] Fuck I'm getting used to arguing with Ardyn.

I can, yes. It is not a...particularly necessary instinct, but rather something I may choose to enjoy from time to time.

[They are especially wary of indulgence of late, however. You may have to forgive them for that; Rapsho was a rude awakening in many respects.]

Though you need not expend resources on my account if they are...valuable.

Anyone ever tell you ya fuss too much? [He reaches out to give them a scritch under one ear and then drops his hand down to stroke Tiana, who is quite content where she's nestled.] Got a few berries, some smoked fish, I'm slowly figuring out how to make pan bread.

This island, and all of you, are my responsibility. I think that I fuss just the right amount.

[It is said with a prim sort of dignity, which is a difficult thing to manage when one is a dog. Nonetheless, it is something they effect quite well.]

Might I inquire as to the reason behind such gifts?

[He reaches into one of the muslin pouches in the basket and produces a strip of smoked fish with a grin.]

Why's it gotta be a gift? Why can't we just hang out and talk and you get to meet my new girl. Shit she likes you more than me.

Most people only venture by when they need something.

[Questions answered, or favors delivered. They do not, strictly speaking, mind that - and they would be foolish to ever assume that one would approach them for anything else. The gesture is, all the same, a polite one.]

[It is very much like an offering, if it were the sort that would translate to a god like them. The Storyteller sniffs the meat curiously.]

[There is just so much about their assumptions no how the world works that are bullshit. Someone's really gotta start calling them on this shit.

[They do, in fact, accept it after a pause - it is only polite, after all. It is an indulgence, food, and not a necessity. If one were to approximate the nearest divine analogue to eating, the storytellings would be the most reasonable parallel.]

Refresh my memory, if you will...where is that situated, specifically?

[They could probably find it without his help - this is their island, after all - but it strikes them as more courteous to ask.]

Okay it's not completely re-worked yet but the old lighthouse on the East coast, the northern most one?

[Snagging a piece of fish for himself and dropping a handful of berries and torn up bread pieces for Tiana.]

Still gotta finish up the roof but that wall that caved in is all fixed up.

[The Storyteller sits back on their haunches, canid jaws briefly parting in a yawn.]

I've been using it as a teaching project so I've had a lot of help. And that means there's others that can fix up their homes now too.

[It might be slower going for most of the others because... well Gladio is sturdier than most.]

It is good of you to do so. I am not much help in that area, I am afraid.

[The most they can do is provide building materials with the proper amount of stories, and that is the extent of it. They imagine this is the source of much discontent, as far as their lack of construction expertise is concerned.]

[Look this island can provide most of what they need. Seriously. There's no reason to need building materials from Tory.]

Like I said, the more people that know how to do it the easier it makes things on me.

Hmmm I got a question for ya though. A theory of sorts. Can... Would it be possible, if we built some sort of irrigation equipment, to channel fresh water from the stream through the mana pool to the islets?

Hm. It might be possible, yes. I am not much of an engineer, though...

[Their gaze drifts, momentarily. For a moment, the dog seems pensive - distant. It is not entirely clear how they manage to look contemplative while so thoroughly canine, but manage it they do.]

I believe the opportunity to explore such an option may soon arise, though I cannot specifically say when.

I can rig it all up I just dunno if I feed it into the mana pool how or if it would come out the other side.

[Since the mana pools work by you wanting to go somewhere specific and you have to think about it and everything, would it even be possible to dedicate a mana pool like that?]

Oh-ho? Got somethin fancy comin up soon?

It's difficult to say. The mana pools are not conducive to continuous transportation, but there may be ways...around that.

[They're not about to elaborate at the moment. Sorry, Gladio.]

[He eyes them for a moment, clearly curious but ultimately he decides not to keep pushing, just letting it go with a shrug.]

Alright, if you say so. [Plucking out another piece of fish this time for himself as he looks around the temple.]

Hey... You ever think of building this place back up? I mean... I figure you've got better ways of doing it than I do.

I only have so much power at my disposal at any given time. It seems...inefficient to waste it on a cosmetic alteration.

[The place is not nearly as bad as it one was - so many people frequenting it has caused it to achieve a more lived-in look, simply by nature - but it is still a sad shadow of what it once was.]
